Should bring some serious competition to the present market

Yes it should improve the situation for consumers. Interesting that we have Arabs, European and Chinese competing in Pakistan. And this deal is good for China Mobile:
CHINA DAILY (1/23) reports that the announcement by China Mobile yesterday to acquire Pakistani mobile-phone operator Paktel is no doubt a landmark in the Chinese operator’s increasingly aggressive overseas push.
BLOOMBERG (1/23) reports that China Mobile, the world’s biggest cellphone operator by users, had its share-price estimate raised by Merrill Lynch on expectations that subscriber growth will increase.

Hope China Telecom’s arrival in Pakistani market bring a pleasent change for mobile subscribers. It will give life to Paktel earlier which was turning gray. More compitation, more inovation, more relief to mobile subscribers.

Update: China Mobile has paid more than $30 million to Pakistani telecom regulator as licence fee installment of the cellular company it acquired last month, which is the first chunk of $400 million investment plan of the telecom giant.
A senior official at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said the Chinese company had finally made a payment of $31.6 million on account of initial license fee and spectrum charges billed by the watchdog.
“China Mobile has paid total Rs1.9 billion, which includes $29.1 million as an installment of initial license fee and charges related to spectrum allocations and technical services,” said the official on condition of anonymity.
With the latest payment, he said the company had cleared its accounts and was free to press ahead with its investment plan by launching proper operations. He said the company made the payment within the deadline set by the PTA.
“Paktel owed around $29 million to the PTA on account of initial license fee and the authority wanted its parent Millicom International to pay it before wrapping up operations in Pakistan,” added the official.

Well I believe China Mobile will Struggle in Making any Impact as they are a Monoploist by nature and have never faced competition in their own market. So the outcome of this will be very interesting….

i do not personally think it is money well spent-WIMAX is being rolled out as we speak(here in PAK wateem telecom) and if you dig deep enough you will find out it there is a major coup de tat on the whole cell phone wireless and wired broadband business scheme-financed and perfected by all the major players involved in the internet and cell phone business in the world-search the web for”WIMAX FORUM” and read their member roster and how much it costs to become part of the roster and the future of wireless internet voip convergence will unfold before your very eyes!!! better invest in the future because the past is about to become redundant!!!

and as for chinese WIMAX…CHINA UNICOM is building out their WIMAX networks as we type and are about to gain/steal majority dominance over the chinese market(chinese gov’t owns them
and because WIMAX is a better(far reaching-in distance) and less expensive technology!!! read post above to wet your whistle!!! -and in the USA CLEARWIRE is about to wrestle control away from all major players with its networks in place and running! in it owns 25% of the frequency range in the whole USA and controls that frequency in most of the major cities/markets-CLEARWIRE has spent most of its money aquiring license’s and is backed by major investor/shareholders MOTOROLA and INTEL the only threat to CLEARWIRE is sprint/nextel and the owner of CLEARWIRE Craig McCAW used to own/created sprint/nextel!!! shoot he pretty much invented the wireless revolution in the USA!there is a major coup getting ready to take place worldwide, and not just in PAKISTAN! 2G 3G and hardwire operators will have to get on board or lose out-also 56% of WIMAX networks use hardware/equipment manufactured by a israeli company called ALVARION so do some homework and surf the next wave into the future and to the bank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and check this out >>>
Pakistan plans to roll out the largest mobile WiMax network yet, Motorola announced Tuesday.
Motorola is providing the country’s “WATEEN TELECOM” with an 802.16e-based Motowi4 network. An initial uptake of a million subscribers is expected, with a nationwide rollout to follow.
As a developing country, Pakistan has until now lacked the infrastructure for widespread broadband.
The deployment is a milestone in the spread of WiMax, a superfast wireless technology that has a range of up to 30 miles and can deliver broadband at a theoretical maximum of 75 megabits per second. The 802.16-2004 standard, which is used in fixed WiMax networks, is being skipped in favor of a large-scale introduction of 802.16e, which was only recently agreed upon by the WiMax Forum.
“We made the decision 18 months ago to jump over (802.16-2004) and go straight to 802.16e,” Paul Sergeant, Motorola’s marketing director for Motowi4, told ZDNet UK on Tuesday. “We’ve been working on it for a while, which is how we’re able to ship so soon after agreement.”
“802.16e leads to a much larger market as it addresses mobility needs, but we also felt it could be just as good a solution for fixed broadband,” he added.
Some analysts said the Pakistan deal is proof that major players in the industry are throwing their weight behind mobile WiMax in a way they haven’t with the fixed version.
“The really interesting thing is that Motorola is really focusing on the mobile version, as are Alcatel and Siemens,” Julien Grivolas, a telecom analyst at Ovum, said.

“Mobile WiMax is going to be something for the big players, as opposed to fixed WiMax, where (they) set up OEM (original equipment manufacturer) agreements with smaller vendors,” Grivolas said.
On Tuesday, Motorola also made its first public demonstration of third-party interoperability of its WiMax products. At the WiMax World Europe Conference in Vienna, it showed off a third-party PCMCIA card that incorporates a mobile WiMax chip from Beceem Communications.
“The market is looking for carrier class (802.16e) solutions that either support mobility from the beginning or can be upgraded,” Sergeant said.
David Meyer of ZDNet UK reported from London.

and now imagine this>>> your grocerystore/market tells your refridgerator what you just bought and keeps a running inventory refridgerator tells your grocery store/market and your cell/pda/laptop what supplies you are low on- your fridge orders groceries from store tells your pda/wireless device that you need to stop buy and pick up your order on your way home from work after you ok the transaction and you swipe your pda across a scanner to pay for your items-no need for cash for someone to rob you and your pda/wireless device only works with yourself because of biometric security programs-all capable because of the WIMAX platform-and even the poor will be able to afford it because here in the usa it is 1/2 to 2/3 cheaper to conncet and talk on the WIMAX net than use a telecom dsl wireless cell network-imagine the possibilities-T

I hope so it will be cheaper as u said. In my opinion every one is looter in this country and like always it will be only available to people that have lot of black money and they dont know where to spend. And for some orgainization who realy need high speed. U can see the tariff of Dancom’s Wimax tariff for prouf. a person like me canot even imagine to have a service like this. Thats why we are far behind from the rest of world.
But i hope one day this situation will be change inshaALLAH.
